Daniel Boone
Boys’ Basketball
The Daniel Boone High School boys’ basketball team split four games last week and are 3-5 in the Berks League and 8-12 overall.
The Blazers began the week with a non-league road game against Owen J. Roberts. The Wildcats used a strong fourth quarter to defeat the Blazers, 50-39.
Pop Lacey led the way for Daniel Boone with 10 points in the game. Dan Downs scored eight and Kenny Worthington scored seven.
On Jan. 24, Daniel Boone got back to Berks League play to take on Exeter on the road. The Blazers did some serious damage to Exeter’s division championship hopes by defeating the Eagles, 44-40.
Exeter held a 10-8 lead after one quarter, but the Blazers came back by outscoring the Eagles in the second quarter, 12-4 to take a 20-14 halftime lead.
Worthington and Downs paced the Daniel Boone offense with 13 points apiece while Lacey scored 11.
On Jan. 26, the Blazers came back to host Manheim Central in a non-league game. A big fourth quarter helped Boone to a 46-35 victory.
The Blazers held a 21-15 halftime lead, but Manheim Township cut the lead to one after three quarters. Daniel Boone pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Manheim Central, 18-8.
Worthington led the way for Daniel Boone with 10 points in the game. Cedric Mann scored nine points and Steven Sievers added seven. Paul Galanti, Lacey and Stephon Williams each scored six points.
On Jan. 29 Daniel Boone traveled to Shillington to take on Governor Mifflin. The Mustangs scored 20 fourth quarter points and defeated the Blazers, 53-36.
Mifflin held a 23-13 lead at halftime, before the Blazers fought their way back to close within one. But the Mustangs pulled back away when they outscored the Blazers in the fourth quarter, 20-10.
Downs led the Blazers in scoring with 13 points. Willimas and Sievers each had six points and Worthington scored four.
Girls’ Basketball
The Daniel Boone High School girls’ basketball team lost a pair of games last week and are 2-5 in the Berks League and 5-15 overall.
On Jan. 26, the Lady Blazers traveled to Manheim Central for a non-league game. Manheim Central defeated the Blazers, 43-35.
Manheim Central jumped out to a 13-10 lead after one quarter, then increased the lead to 10 by halftime, 24-14. They outscored Boone in the third quarter, 13-11, and Boone was unable to mount a comeback.
Dahlia Wilson and Shelby Vanderslice led the way for the Lady Blazers with nine points apiece in the game. Stephanie Sievers scored eight and Kaitlyn Keeley added five.
On Jan. 29, the Lady Blazers played host to Governor Mifflin. The Mustangs used a strong fourth quarter to defeat the Blazers, 58-49.
The Mustangs held a slim 23-18 halftime lead, then pulled away in the fourth quarter by outscoring Boone, 21-14.
Kelly Howiszak scored 15 points in the game, while Sievers scored 13 and Wilson netted 10.
Wrestling
The Daniel Boone High School wrestling team ended the Berks League season at 2-5 after losing to Reading on Jan. 23, 36-31.
Winning by pins for Boone were: Owen Powell (106), 3:43; Christian Fernandez (138), 0:23; and Jay Yohn (170), 2:05.
Jordan Lahaise (145) won by a major decision for Boone, 15-2, while winning be decisions were: James Kramer (152), 3-1; Nick Limone (160), 11-9; and Kurt Gheer (220), 2-0.
Boys’ Bowling
The Daniel Boone High School boys’ bowling team improved to 10-20 after defeating Wilson, 3-0.
Alex Blood led the Daniel Boone bowlers with a three-game series of 667. Austin Kerper bowled a 663 and Ethan Resh bowled a 598.
Girls’ Bowling
The Daniel Boone High School girls’ bowling team fell to 6-21 in the Berks League after losing to Wilson on Jan. 23, 3-0.
High roller for Boone was Morgan Raneiri who bowled a three-game series of 564. Jessica Pfugler bowled a 524 series.
Wilson won the junior varsity match, 3-0.
Exeter
Boys’ Basketball
The Exeter High School boys’ basketball team lost a pair of Berks League games last week and fell to 5-3 in the league and 17-3 overall.
The Eagles began the week with a home game against Daniel Boone. The Blazers did some serious damage to Exeter’s division championship hopes by defeating the Eagles, 44-40.
Exeter held a 10-8 lead after one quarter, but the Blazers came back by outscoring the Eagles in the second quarter, 12-4 to take a 20-14 halftime lead.
Justin Trojanowski led the Exeter offense with 10 points in the contest. Kris Vaden and Bryan Stinson each had eight while Joe Beddall and Derek Stump each had seven points.
On Jan. 29 the Eagles traveled to Wilson for a big Division 1 battle with the Bulldogs. Wilson outscored Exeter in all four quarters and defeated Exeter, 56-32.
Wilson jumped out to a 17-8 lead after one quarter, then extended the lead to 18 by halftime, 28-10. The deficit was too much for Exeter to recover.
Vaden paced the Exeter offense with 16 points in the game. Bryan Stinson chipped in with six points.
On Jan. 26, the Eagles played host to non-league Owen J. Roberts. A strong first half helped Exeter defeat the Wildcats, 49-46.
Exeter took a 14-9 lead after one quarter, then extended the lead to eight by halftime, 25-17.
Brett Gilbert and Trojanowski led the Exeter offense with 12 points, while Vaden scored nine and Stinson scored eight.
Girls’ Basketball
The Exeter High School girls’ basketball team fell to 0-7 in the Berks League and 5-13 overall after a league game to Wilson on Jan. 29, 56-14.
Alison Snyder led the way for Exeter with nine points in the game.
Wrestling
The Exeter High School wrestling team made it to the Berks League semifinals before losting to the eventual league championship Wilson Bulldogs on Jan. 26, 51-18.
In the quarterfinal round, Exeter defeated Hamburg, 46-28.
Winning by pins for Exeter were: James Moran (195), 1:55; Scott Schaeffer (220), 4:54; Brett Kulp (106), 0:21; Ethan Stever (138), 2:38; Justice Caban (145), 3:36; and Alex Kramer (152), 3:48.
Tristan Watts (113) won by a 14-1 decision and Alex Keim (170) won by default.
In the loss to Wilson, Moran (182) won by a pin in 1:34 while Kulp (106) won by forfeit.
Winning by decisions for Exeter were: Watts (113), 2-1 in overtime; and Kramer (152), 6-2.
On Jan. 23, the Eagles closed out the regular Berks League season with a 46-19 victory over Twin Valley. The Eagles finished at 5-2 in the league.
Boys’ Bowling
The Exeter High School boys’ bowling team improved to 21-9 last week after winning a pair of Berks League matches.
On Jan. 24, the Eagles defeated Berks Catholic, 3-0. Scott Schellhammer led the way for Exeter by rolling a three-game series of 671. Bobby Wike bowled a 670 and Mike Kazmierczak bowled a 654 series.
On Jan. 29, the Eagles topped Twin Valley, 2-1. Wike led the way this time with a series of 682. Schellhammer bowled a 622 series and Evan Johnson bowled a 619.
Exeter won the junior varsity match, 3-0.
Girls’ Bowling
The Exeter High School girls’ bowling team dropped to 10-20 in the Berks League after a pair of league losses last week.
On Jan. 24, Exeter was defeated by Berks Catholic, 2-1. Courtney Meyers led the way for Exeter with a three-game series of 538. Erin Murphy bolwed a 497.
The Lady Eagles also lost to Twin Valley on Jan. 29, 2-1. Gabby Sabo bowled a 570 to lead Exeter while Murphy bowled a 467.
Exeter won the junior varsity match, 2-1.
Governor Mifflin
Boys’ Basketball
The Governor Mifflin High School boys’ basketball team won two of three games last week, inclding winning its first Berks League game of the season.
The Mustangs began the week with a road game at Reading. The Red Knights got of a great start, and despite surge at the end for Mifflin, Reading won the game, 68-60.
Reading jumped out to a 21-9 lead after one quarter. The Red Knights increased the lead to 14 by halftime, and led at the end of three quarters, 51-32. The Mustangs scored 28 fourth quarter points but wasn’t enough to make up for the deficit.
Tommy DePaul led the Governor Mifflin offense with 17 points in the contest, including three three-point buckets. Austin Peters hit three treys and totaled 16 points while Reid Hoff scored 14 and Trevon Wight had seven.
On Jan. 26, the Mustangs hit the road to take on non-league opponent High Points Baptist Academy. Governor Mifflin had no trouble in this game as they cruised to an 80-40 victory.
The Mustangs took control of the game early, outscoring High Point in the first quarter, 27-2. Mifflin never let High Point back in the game as the Mustangs scored 42 second half points.
DePaul led the Mifflin offense with 19 points. Peter scored 14 (four three-point baskets) while Jevon Willet scored nine and Evan Pollock had eight. Wight and Colin McKnight each contributed with six points.
On Jan. 29, the Mustangs earned their first league victory when they defeated Daniel Boone, 53-36. The Mustangs scored 20 fourth quarter points and defeated the Blazers, 53-36.
Mifflin held a 23-13 lead at halftime, before the Blazers fought their way back to close within one. But the Mustangs pulled back away when they outscored the Blazers in the fourth quarter, 20-10.
DePaul was the top scorer once again for Mifflin with 18 points in the game. Hoff and Wight each scored 10 points and Peters added eight.
Girls’ Basketball
The Governor Mifflin High School girls’ basketball team split a pair of Berks League game and are now tied for second place in Division 1 with a 5-3 record. They are 11-8 overall.
On Friday, Jan. 25 the Lady Mustangs played host to Reading. A big second quarter helped the Lady Knights to a 50-43 victory over Mifflin.
Reading took a 12-9 lead after one quarter, then upped the advantage to 14 after outscored the Mustangs in the second quarter, 14-3. The Lady Mustangs fought back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Reading, 22-12, but could not make up for the deficit.
Madison Koehler led the way for Mifflin with 15 points, including three three-point buckets. Emily Gingrich netted 11 points while Megan McKay scored seven and Melissa Martin added six.
On Jan. 29, the Lady Mustangs traveled to Birdsboro to take on Daniel Boone. The Mustangs used a strong fourth quarter to defeat the Blazers, 58-49.

Wrestling
The Governor Mifflin High School wrestling team advanced to the semifinal found of the Berks County League Team Tournament on Jan. 26 before losing to Schuylkill Valley. 36-31.
In the quarterfinal round, Mifflin defeated Brandywine Heights, 38-23.
Earning pins for the Mustangs were: Dylan Harr (138), 1:17; and Matt Harris (152), 0:16.
Jan Johnson (220) won by a technical fall (16-1), as did Hunter Gimbor (106), 19-4.
Winning by decisions for Mifflin were: Garrett Henry (285), 2-0; Allen Arentz (113), 7-3; Colin Johnson (120), 10-8; Robert Karmonick (126), 10-5; and Anthony Limone (145), 6-2.
Wilson Fontanez (160) won by a forfeit.
In the semifinals against Schulkill Valley, Matt Harris (152) pinned his opponent in 1:13, and Carlos Conde-Puello (170) pinned his opponent in 3:31 for 12 of Mifflin’s points.
Marcus and Jan Johnson each won by forfeits, while Dylan Harr (138) won by a 7-0 decision, and Jonah Fisher (126) won by a 10-0 decision.
On Jan. 29 the Mustangs lost to Cedar Cliff in in the opening round of the District 3-AAA tournament, 41-27.
Earning pins for Mifflin were: Jan Johnson (195), 2:27; Allen Arentz (106), 0:55; and Jonah Fisher (132), 0:54.
Winning by decisions were: Zach Sheetz (113), 6-2; Robert Karmonick (126), 9-4; and Matt Harris (145), 7-0.
Boys’ Swimming
The Governor Mifflin High School boys’ swimming team improved to 6-1 in the Central Penn League by defeating Wilson on Jan. 29, 99-87. It was the first time the Governor Mifflin boys’ team defeated Wilson since 1996.
The Mustangs were led by Garrett Brown who won a pair of individual events. Brown was first in the 50 free (22.07 seconds) and the 100 free (48.67 seconds). Kyle McElroy won the 100 breast in a time of 1:07.59.
Also winning for the Mustangs was the 200 medley relay team of John Kersikoski, McElroy, Evan Barbon and Brown (1;44.67).
On Jan. 24, the Mustangs lost a non-league battle with Owen J. Roberts, 104-80.
Winning individual events for Mifflin were: Sterg Dikos, 200 individual medley (2:07.86); Alex Pfisterer, diving (258.25 points).
Also winning for Governor Mifflin was the 400 free relay team of Dikos, Michael Novotny, Issaiah Coldren and Barbon (3:34.44).
Girls’ Swimming
The Governor Mifflin High School girls’ swimming team fell to 5-2 in the Central Penn League after losing to Wilson on Jan. 29, 118-68.
Winning individual events for Mifflin were: Syelee Doshi, diving (172.95); Dayne Martin, 100 fly (1:02.36).
On Jan. 24, the Lady Mustangs lost to Owen J. Roberts, 107-77. Winning individual events for Mifflin were: Rachel Lombardo, diving (160.90);
Gabriella Johnson, 10p0 breast (1:11.44); and Dayne Martin, 100 fly (1:04.11).
Also winning for Governor Mifflin was the 400 free relay team of Morgan McMahon, Emily Argentati, Julia Adams and Johnson (3:57.73).
Boys’ Bowling
The Governor Mifflin High School boys’ bowling team remained in first place with a record of 25-2 after defeating Reading on Jan. 23, 3-0.
Scott Dreisbach led the way for Mifflin with a three-game series of 682 against Reading. Tanner DeLucia bowled a 672 and Jon Gottschall bowled a 610 series.
Governor Mifflin won the junior varsity match, 3-0.
Girls’ Bowling
The Governor Mifflin High School bowling team improved to 15-12 in the Berks League after defeating Reading on Jan. 23, 2-1.
Leading the way for the Lady Mustangs was Emily Carlson who bowled a three-game series of 605. Nicole Stambaugh bowled a 577 series.
