AMITY – A natural gas leak at the former Kiwi shoe polish plant along Route 662 in Amity Tuesday afternoon caused the building to be evacuated and the road to be closed to traffic.

The incident was first reported at 12:55 p.m. and by the time police arrived, the building, which is occupied by CEI, Cosmetic Essence International, had already been evacuated.

Police said the leak was apparently caused when a lawn mower ran over an exposed pipe and opened the pipe.

A crew from UGI Utilities arrived and tried to cut the gas supply off into the street but was unsuccessful, police said.

Instead, the leaking pipe had to be capped, said police.

Attempts to reach a spokesman for UGI Utilities was unsuccessful.

The Monarch and Amity fire companies responded to the scene as well as UGI.

No injuries were reported, police said.
